November 9, 2021
traditional marketing, digital marketing

In the world of marketing, there are many different ways to go about marketing your business. Not only do you have to decide what your end goal will be, who your target audience is, and your budget, but you have to decide if you will go with traditional marketing or digital marketing. Both have their pros and cons, so let’s dive into each of them!

Traditional Marketing

Traditional marketing includes many different forms of marketing and advertising. To put it simply, traditional marketing is anything that isn’t online. There are four main forms of traditional marketing - print, broadcast, mail, and telephone.

Here are some examples of each that you may see, hear, or get on a daily basis:

  • Print - magazines, posters, billboards, newsletters, brochures
  • Broadcast - commercials on TV, ads over the radio, previews before a movie
  • Mail - postcards, fliers, letters, and catalogs received in the mail
  • Telephone - cold calls over the phone for sales, surveys, lead generation, and more

Digital Marketing

On the other hand, digital marketing is anything that is digital. Digital marketing also has many different forms and has become very popular due to advances in technology. The main forms of digital marketing are over the internet, mobile phones or devices, social media, and through search engines.

Here are some examples of each that you may see, hear, or receive on a daily basis:

It all depends on your business goals when choosing between traditional and digital marketing. Here are some things to consider when choosing between the two:

Reach

  • Digital marketing is able to reach globally, or within specific locations
  • Traditional marketing is able to reach locals

Conversions & Engagement

  • Digital marketing has relatively fast conversion and engagement rates
  • Traditional marketing has slow conversion rates and low engagement rates

Tracking

  • Digital marketing has the possibility of tracking who saw your ads, where, and how many people have seen them
  • Traditional marketing does not allow for tracking of who saw your ads or how many times they were seen

Skip-Ability

  • Digital marketing allows people to skip or avoid online ads
  • Traditional marketing does not always allow ads to be skiped or avoided

Editing

  • Digital marketing allows for ads to be edited after they are published
  • Traditional marketing does not allow for ads to be edited after they are published

When it comes to digital marketing or traditional marketing, there is no wrong way to go. Traditional marketing is tried and true, while digital marketing is continuously expanding. It all depends on the business goals and what is most important at this time, or with a specific marketing campaign. In most cases, businesses use both together in their marketing plan.
